Privacy Policy

Terms of Use

Anouk holds some of the most personal things a family has: a parent’s voice and the stories of their life. This policy explains what we collect, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and the choices you and the person Anouk calls have.

Anouk is operated by Emmanuel Grinspan, Israel (“Anouk”, “we”, “us”), who is responsible for the personal data described here. It applies together with our Terms of Use.

1. The short version

  • Calls are recorded and transcribed, so that the family can keep the stories.
  • What is said is processed by artificial intelligence to hold the conversation and to write stories, summaries and notes.
  • Only the members of a family space can see that family’s content. We do not sell personal data and we show no advertising.
  • The person Anouk calls can ask it to stop at any time, and you can ask us to delete everything.
  • What they ask to keep between them and Anouk, and other private matters, is left out of everything the family sees and hears.

2. Whose data, and what we collect

Family members (account holders).

  • Account details: email address, name, and, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile Google shares with us.
  • Your role in the family space, the language you use, and a phone number if you verify one.
  • Questions you ask Anouk about the stories, and the topics you ask it to bring up.

The person Anouk calls (the “Person”).

  • Details the family provides: first name, phone number, language, time zone, how to address them, things about their life, topics to avoid, and a photo if the family adds one.
  • Audio recordings of the calls with Anouk, and written transcripts of them.
  • What we derive from the calls: stories, summaries, translations, a “life map” of people, places and moments they mentioned, things Anouk remembers for next time, and short notes on how they sounded.
  • Call information: dates, duration, whether a call was answered, and requests such as “call me back tomorrow” or “please stop calling”.

What a person tells Anouk can include sensitive information, for example about health, beliefs or family matters, and information about other people they talk about. We process it only to provide the Service to that family.

What stays private. Some things the Person says are left out of everything the family sees and hears: what they ask to keep between them and Anouk and, depending on the level the family chooses, secrets and confessions, hurtful words about family members, and money and inheritance matters. Those parts are removed from the transcript, the recording, the stories, the life map and the emails, and Anouk does not keep them in its memory. A sealed, encrypted copy of them is kept, which no family member can open. Our team opens it only in exceptional cases: when the law requires it, or when it is needed to protect someone’s life or safety. Worries about safety (for example a fall, someone hurting them, or a scam) are still sent to the family as alerts, without repeating the private words.

Technical data. Basic logs needed to run and protect the Service (such as IP address, device and browser type, and times of requests), and a record of verification codes sent, to prevent abuse.

3. Why we use it

  • To provide the Service: place the calls, hold the conversation, remember earlier calls, write the stories and notes, and show them to the family.
  • To keep people safe: verify that a phone number belongs to the Person, limit how often calls and codes can be sent, honour requests to stop calling, and prevent misuse.
  • To run and improve Anouk: fix problems, understand how the Service is used, and make the conversations better. We do not use your recordings to train our own AI models.
  • To communicate with you: sign-in codes, important notices about the Service, and replies to your messages.
  • To meet legal duties and to establish or defend legal claims.

Where the law requires a legal basis (for example under the GDPR), we rely on: the contract with the family member; the consent of the Person, which the family member confirms having obtained before the first call; our legitimate interests in keeping the Service safe and working; and legal obligations.

4. Who helps us process it

We use trusted service providers, who process data on our behalf and under their own security and privacy commitments:

  • ElevenLabs (voice AI): runs the spoken conversation, and so processes the call audio and what is said.
  • Twilio (telephony): connects the phone calls and sends verification codes by text or voice.
  • Anthropic (AI): reads the transcripts to write stories, summaries, notes and answers.
  • Neon (database and sign-in) and Vercel (hosting and file storage): store accounts, family content, recordings and photos.
  • Google, if you choose to sign in with Google, and Google Analytics (visit statistics, see Cookies below).
  • A payment provider, when paid plans are introduced. We will not store your card details ourselves.

We may also disclose data if the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety or our rights, or to a company that takes over the operation of Anouk, which would remain bound by this policy. We never sell personal data.

5. Where data is kept

Our database and file storage are located in the European Union (Germany). Some providers, including those for voice, telephony and AI, process data in the United States and other countries. When personal data leaves your country, we rely on the safeguards the law provides, such as adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses.

6. How long we keep it

  • Family content (recordings, transcripts, stories, life map, notes, photo) is kept for as long as the family space exists, because preserving it is the purpose of the Service.
  • When you ask us to delete a family space or an account, we delete its content from our systems within 30 days, and ask our providers to do the same, except where we must keep something to meet a legal duty or to resolve a dispute.
  • The sealed copy of private parts is kept for as long as the family space exists, and deleted with it.
  • A phone number that asked not to be called is kept on a do-not-call list, so that the request keeps being honoured.
  • Technical logs and records of verification codes are kept for a short period.

7. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live (for example under Israel’s Privacy Protection Law, the GDPR, or US state laws), you may have the right to:

  • see the personal data we hold about you, and receive a copy;
  • have it corrected or deleted;
  • object to or restrict some uses, and withdraw consent;
  • complain to the privacy authority in your country.

The Person has the same rights. They can tell Anouk during any call to stop calling, and they, or the family on their behalf, can ask us to see or delete their recordings and stories. To make any request, write to hello@anouk.life. We may need to confirm who you are before acting, and we answer within the time the law sets.

8. Cookies

We use the cookies and browser storage needed for the Service to work: to keep you signed in, remember your language, remember which family member’s pages you were looking at, and keep an unfinished sign-up form.

We also use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages and steps help families, so we can improve Anouk. It sets its own cookies and receives the pages you open, the buttons you press and general information about your device and region, linked to a random account number. It never receives your name, email, phone number, or anything said in a call, and the secret part of share and invitation links is removed. Advertising features are turned off. Visitors from the European Union, the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked first, and Google Analytics only starts if they agree; you can change your choice by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

We do not use advertising cookies or sell browsing data.

9. Security

Family spaces are private and require sign-in; recordings and photos are stored privately and served only to members of that family; connections are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your data, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

10. Children

Anouk is for adults. Accounts are for people aged 18 or over, and Anouk is not meant to call children. If you believe a child’s data was provided to us, write to us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Anouk evolves. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the family space or by email before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
